Fotona’s revolutionary non-ablative Fotona SMOOTH® mode treats the skin in a smooth, almost “feather-like” non-ablative manner, without bleeding and with precisely controlled temperature deposition. The optical energy is delivered in a unique, sub-second long pulse sequence which prevents temperature build-up at the surface and achieves homogeneous heating within several hundred micrometers of the tissue.

In addition to its thermal penetration effects, the Nd:YAG acne laser treatment also accelerates the healing process and stimulates collagen remodeling, an important step in the long-term treatment of acne.
For treating problematic acne scars, Fotona’s Er:YAG laser wavelength is ideal for gentle ablative scar revision. The Er:YAG laser safely and effectively provides the minimal penetration depth required for light resurfacing of acne-scarred skin, helping to improve skin texture and tone. Unlike chemical peels and dermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing allows the penetration depth to be precisely controlled. The laser gently vaporizes micron-thin layers of the acne-scarred surface to reveal healthy, undamaged skin below. Laser resurfacing is a fast, safe and simple procedure.
Fotona Er:YAG skin resurfacing is used for gentle ablation of scar tissue and activation of collagen remodeling. Acne scars in particular respond well to Er:YAG treatments. For hypertrophic scars, clinical research conducted with the Nd:YAG wavelength show further improvement in the aesthetic appearance and overall tissue quality of a scar, including erythema, volume, pliability, etc.
Skin resurfacing and rejuvenation treatments can be performed either in ablative modes with an Er:YAG laser or non-ablatively with a Nd:YAG laser, depending on the particular aesthetic outcome that the patient and practitioner wish to achieve. In addition, ablative and non-ablative treatments can also be combined into a comprehensive anti-aging treatment, such as Fotona’s TwinLight® Fractional Rejuvenation system.
Unlike traditional treatments such as dermabrasion and chemical peels, the unique characteristics of laser skin resurfacing allow more accurate and precise control over the treatment process.
Long-pulse Nd:YAG lasers offer the perfect solution for treating vascular lesions including hemangiomas, vascular malformations such as port-wine stains, telangiectasias, venous lakes and angiomas.
Fotona’s long-pulse Nd:YAG lasers penetrate to a depth of 5-6 mm into the skin, allowing for highly effective treatments. Independent research shows that over 75% of patients with deep hemangiomas that are treated with Nd:YAG lasers see a dramatic regression in the lesion.
For treating hyperhidrosis, 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser light is used to permanently destroy axillary sweat glands by photoselectively heating sweat gland tissue without damaging the surrounding tissue. The procedure is performed under local anesthetic and is finished in less than an hour. The general steps of the treatment are as follows:
- Step 1 – Locate: Before the operation, the underarms are coated with iodine and starch is used to identify the precise location of the sweat glands.
- Step 2 – Irradiate: A 3 mm incision is made through which a cannula with an optical fiber is passed. Through this optical fiber a QCW 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser beam is fired, which destroys the sweat glands.
- Step 3 – Remove: A grating cannula is used to remove the destroyed glands.
Fotona’s QCW Nd:YAG laser is considered the gold standard in aesthetic surgery, and its application in laser lipolysis has been tested and proven to be safe and effective. Its specific advantages compared to other laser sources include:
- its relatively low absorption in water
- the largest directly heated volume of subcutaneous tissue
- the smallest undesirable thermal effect on neighboring dermal tissue, and
- a significantly higher ability to coagulate blood vessels
Simultaneously, the laser also tightens the surrounding skin to prevent it from sagging after the removal of unwanted fat.
